There once lived a gentle giant who existed intentionally to love the entire world, no matter its flaws, biases, or shortcomings. He loved everyone, and everyone affectionately loved him back. He was a beloved son, spoiled brother, loving father, favorite uncle and nephew, everybody's cousin, reliable teammate, passionate coach, and an unwavering friend. Yeah, those qualities are collectively rare and uniquely a vast part of Mr. Larry K. Florence's DNA. God sent him here with a specific assignment. He's boldly and unselfishly accepted his calling, put in the work, and has finally made it Home to reap the fruits of his labor.
Whenever you refer to Larry's pristine legacy, remember and remind others of his kindred smile and personality, so eloquently combined to add sunshine to the gloomiest of days. Tell the researchers and inquirers about his unmatched tenacity as a legendary student-athlete. Better yet, Google him. Make sure his quietness and melancholy persona weren't misperceived as unawareness or lack of cognizance. Larry understood that the best learners and scholars listened more than they talked. He was an action figure who kept his word if you ever needed his commitment. He was magnetic... easy to love and be around.
Larry's hard fought battle against Multiple Myeloma was divine in spirits, although the surface reality conveyed differently to those unfamiliar with the disease. Imagine living with an 'incurable' disease lingering within your bloodstream for almost fourteen years. He went to bed and woke up to it daily... the harsh reality that his name would one day be called much sooner than he would've liked. Even in knowing what would have made others throw in the towel, Larry embraced his reality, kept his faith in God, and was humble and obedient enough to utilize his situation to bring about awareness of the horrors of Multiple Myeloma to people across the globe. He pumped hope into the hearts, minds, and spirits of many, directly and indirectly, per his levels of transparency and selflessness.
So, when you speak to our hero's name and legacy, be sure to mention the words 'unconditional love'. That was Larry K. Florence wrapped up in two words. Schedule and keep your doctor's appointments; eat foods that gives you life; drink positive fluids; and love people like tomorrow isn't promised. Apologize, forgive, forget, and never take a single day for granted. Most importantly, stand in the gaps for his daughter, sisters, and massive family, for Larry was BIG on family. Thank you for loving Larry unconditionally, and for allowing him to love you!
