A LEGEND ON THE HARDWOOD ALL THE WAY FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL - PHENIX CITY, AL

Larry “Flo” Florence was a star at Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, where he dominated on the court as a senior during the 1995–96 season—averaging an impressive 19 points and 13 rebounds per game—and emerged as a dynamic force for the Red Devils . His exceptional play led to his induction into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame, making him the first basketball player  from Central-Phenix City to earn that honor. Known for his athleticism, leadership, and tenacious presence in the paint, Florence drew admiration from teammates, fans, and coaches alike. His legendary high school career laid the foundation for his collegiate success at Nebraska and his later influence on players across the globe.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA

Nebraska remembers Florence as one of its most experienced and highly accomplished scorers in program history. He remains a top-20 player in career points (1,223) and starts (105). The four-year starter was a team captain during his senior year and generally regarded as a premier defender.

Florence improved on a perennial basis and closed his career as Nebraska's leading scorer during the 1999-2000 season at 13.0 points per game. He logged personal bests in every category that season with 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the league's coaches that year.

PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL OVERSEAS

Following his collegiate career, Florence took his talents overseas, playing professionally for eight years across seven countries, including a stint in Chile with Osorno. His international journey showcased his scoring and defensive acumen on a global stage, and deeply influenced local courts wherever he played.

COACH FLO

Larry “Flo” Florence brought the same passion and leadership to coaching as he did to playing. After concluding his international pro career, he returned to the Columbus, Georgia–Phenix City area and devoted himself to shepherding young athletes on local youth teams. For nearly a decade, he served as a mentor on the court—imparting fundamentals, work ethic, and confidence to boys and girls alike. He was frequently seen at local clinics and summer camps, where his infectious energy and ability to connect with players helped spark their interest in the game. Beyond drills and scrimmages, Florence emphasized character development, encouraging athletes to persevere both in sports and in life. His legacy lives on in the countless players he coached, many of whom credit him as a pivotal influence in their growth as athletes and people.
